immersive walking experience with augmented reality

Vienna ARtScape
︎  ART

The Vienna ArtScape project is an innovative artistic initiative led by Olesia Kvitka that merges street art with augmented reality (AR), transforming the urban environment into a dynamic, interactive experience. Through the integration of the Artivive app, viewers can see animated digital layers applied to existing street art across Vienna, creating a new dimension of visual storytelling.

This project goes beyond traditional art exhibitions by making the city itself a canvas. Utilizing AR technology, Vienna ArtScape turns static murals and graffiti into living works. By scanning the street art with the Artivive app, participants can experience interactive narratives that combine physical artwork with digital animation. As the project grows, it aims to incorporate more artworks and engage a wider audience, further blurring the lines between physical and digital art experiences in urban spaces.

Olesia Kvitka's approach emphasizes the interplay between traditional street art and digital innovation. She selects iconic or underrepresented pieces of street art and enhances their message through her custom AR animations. These animations are often responsive, featuring layered narratives, visual transformations, and sound elements that engage users in a deeper exploration of the artwork’s context and themes.

Her technique blends digital photography, and generative animation with her unique artistic style. The AR layer isn’t merely a supplement; it’s an integral part of the viewer’s experience, revealing new aspects of the artwork's meaning.
